Two Part Invention - Bad Pets
The repertoire for a flute and guitar duo is wonderfully extensive, ranging from arrangements of Elizabethan lute music to Bach, from Italian serenades to modern tangos, and much more. Happily, it also includes new works — music written in the 21st century by talented contemporary composers. This CD represents a collection of works written for Two Part Invention by a group of these talented individuals, all of whom we are also honored to call our friends. Our sincere thanks and appreciation go to composers Glenn Caluda, Manley Mallard, and Paul Salerni, as well as to guest vocalists Patricia Koch Budlong, soprano, and Jan Opalach, bass-baritone.
Bad Pets — Paul Salerni
Musical settings of three 20th century poems — about animals, behaving badly...
Regrets, Tears, and Blarney — Glenn Caluda
Based on three Appalachian folk tunes — in The House Carpenter, a woman leaves her home and husband, the carpenter, and meets only tragedy. Geordie is the tale of a wife begging for her husband's life as he is tried for poaching. And The Leprechaun relates the search for a pot of gold — with consequences.
Michael's Goodnight — John Arnold
Written as a tribute to the late Michael Hedges, a remarkable guitarist and composer.
Speaking of Love — Paul Salerni
Three poems by Dana Gioia, exploring some aspects of love.
How Sensible — Manley Mallard
Tango Triste — John Arnold
Friends and colleagues for many years, Mallard and Arnold wrote these two paired pieces, exploring a little of the of the guitar's Latin and jazz traditions.
Two Partita — Paul Salerni
A series of dances for flute and guitar — everything from bossa nova to rock — presented as a traditional musical suite, and blending classical and contemporary influences.
